The option to bypass the IBC 12 ft maximum depth limit for allowable lateral passive pressure was removed after a careful review of the code requirements. Section 1807.3.2.1 of the IBC limits the depth used to calculate allowable lateral passive pressure to a maximum of 12 ft. Allowing this limit to be ignored created the potential for designs that may not comply with the IBC.
While the 12 ft language appears under the non-constrained condition in IBC 1807.3.2.1, the code does not redefine the 'd' term for the constrained condition in IBC 1807.3.2.2. Section 1807.3.2.2 introduces only a few additional variables. As a result, the assumption is that for all undefined terms, including 'd', we are to refer back to IBC 1807.3.2.1. Therefore, the 12 ft cap is now applied to both non-constrained and constrained pole footings to support a consistent interpretation of the code. This helps remove ambiguity and keeps calculations aligned with the IBC.
This change may increase the required embedment depth for:
•Non-constrained pole footings deeper than 36 ft, where previous behavior did not cap the allowable pressure at the 12 ft equivalent.
•Constrained pole footings deeper than 12 ft, where previous behavior did not cap the allowable pressure at the 12 ft equivalent.
If you have existing projects that relied on pressures exceeding the 12 ft equivalent, we recommend reviewing them to confirm whether embedment depths need to be adjusted under the enforced IBC limit.
